  4. reforming the calendar. The result of his
  5. observations was the Jalali era, begun 1079.
  6. He wrote a study of algebra, which was known
  7. in Europe as well as in the East. In the
  8. West, Omar Khayyam is chiefly known as a poet
  9. through Edward Fitzgerald's version of The
  10. Rubaiyat of Omar Khayyam 1859.
